During times like these, good news stories are more important than ever, to raise the spirits. I have one that shines a light on how adversity can bring out the best in people. I’d like to take this opportunity to publicly express my gratitude to my friend, Will Horan.
A week or so ago, Will reached out to me with the offer of N95 masks, concerned for the health of myself and my fellow healthcare providers. These masks are designed to fit close to the face and effectively filter out airborne particles and are an important part of preventing the spread of COVID-19 from person to person. As a frontline worker in the medical field, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is crucial for being able to continue working without risking my health or that of my patients. Will’s heartfelt offer means that I can still do my job and treat patients who need help, while staying safe.
I met Will through the Midville Dodgers Baseball team on which we both play (check them out on Facebook and Instagram). The team brings together men from around New York and from various walks of life including New York State Troopers, members of the NYPD, teachers, businessmen, and doctors. The team, which was set up in 1949, was active throughout the ‘50s before being disbanded. Thanks to local Councilman and President of the Juniper Park Civic Association, Robert Holden, the team was reformed in the ‘90s and has now been an important part of the community for over 20 years. It’s the little things that make a difference and it’s because of Robert’s simple decision that this brotherhood exists today, through which I may never have met Will.
As well as being my teammate, Will is the president of Biometric Time Clock Systems, developing devices which use a person’s physical, genetic or behavioral characteristics for identification and verification. Among the products his company manufacturers are infrared scanners which offer medical professionals the opportunity to scan patients for fever without touching them. In the current climate, this sort of technology is more important than ever.
This is an unusual and trying time for everyone and I am more grateful than ever to be part of a committed team that looks out for one another. Thank you to Robert Holden for bringing back the Midville Dodgers and thank you Will for your kind donation which means that more people will continue to get the pain management and rehabilitation support they need.
